Emergency Contraceptive pills Contraindications

Emergency contraceptive pills are safe and effective for all women. This includes women who cannot, for whatever reason, use hormonal contraception. Since emergency contraceptive pills are used for short-term prevention of pregnancy, there are no medical conditions that make them unsafe for any woman.
However, there are a few circumstances in which the emergency contraceptive may not be a good choice:
– for women who take oral glucocorticoids to control severe asthma, Ulipristal acetate ECPs are not recommended;
– if a woman has taken progestogen within seven days before taking a Ulipristal acetate ECP, the effectiveness could be reduced; and
– in women with higher BMIs or body weight, there is a possibility that oral emergency contraceptive pills, particularly LNG-EC, may be less effective [9].
When ECPs are not a good option, your healthcare provider will most likely recommend a non-hormonal IUD as a form of emergency contraception.
